It’s almost as if there’s a political machine operating behind the hacker group Anonymous. Much like any major political campaign, the candidates seeks out a national platform while an army of grassroots activists spreads the message on a localized scale. And when this political machine works, it can be highly effective.
Perhaps Anonymous is thinking on the same strategic scale? The group has been highly effective in garnering national headlines by targeting companies and governments with its “hacktivisim” efforts. And now it seems they are operating like a grassroots movement by tackling smaller, more localized issues.
Yesterday, the hacker group shut down the Orlando Chamber of Commerces web site for most of the and posted a boycott Orlando message on a major theme parks Internet page to protest the homeless-feeding policies of Mayor Buddy Dyer. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Orlandos restrictions on feeding large groups in downtown parks has resulted in arrests of members of Food Not Bombs, a group that recently lost a court fight to continue its food giveaways at Lake Eola.
For those who cover the news on a national scale, Orlando’s policies for dealing with feeding the homeless would have never registered on our radar screen. Though it did capture the attention of Anonymous, which leads us to believe that there are localized sub-chapters (if you will) of the group that are tackling localized issues around the nation.
So, for all you local chamber of commerce leaders and politicians out there, be careful what you do. There could be a member of Anonymous living right around the corner who is just watching, waiting and anticipating….
