Facing the Information Security Hole in 2009:

The unacknowledged threat to our homeland and financial security

Every few days there is yet another breach of information security. And each breach seems to be The Biggest Ever, until the next one is announced.

It is now widely acknowledged by security experts from the federal government on down that the problem of data security breaches will get worse as the financial debacle worsens and companies cut spending and workers. Finally, there is growing awareness of one of the primary concerns of our team: it is inevitable that this compromised data will be used for terrorism.

As we talk with people interested in this issue, including security gurus, corporate governance and regulatory experts, privacy advocates, directors and officers, corporate lawyers, managers, and plaintiffs and class-action attorneys, we get a lot of questions about this cutting-edge subject. The jobs.guardian.co.uk online jobs website has about 10 million users, including their US jobs site. Over the weekend they notified about half a million job seekers in the United Kingdom that hackers had compromised their databases and stolen a copy of their personal information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and job history.

The attack on the Guardian Jobs website further highlights that cyber criminals are increasingly interested in collecting personal details from as many people as possible.

They appear to be building dossiers from collections of information such as job site databases, fraudulent online surveys and phishing attacks. This data can be aggregated by criminals to perpetrate acts of fraud, and to gain access to people’s accounts at other online systems such as banking and payments services.

The rate of increase of these attacks is worrying, and the sophistication of online criminals continues to increase.

Its becoming clear that credentials such as usernames, email addresses and passwords are all vulnerable. P

If you believe that adults can suffer from identity theft or be mislead by online criminals, imagine what children can experience in case their online surfing time is not properly guided. In fact, parents should know that when children are online, it is just like they are out in public. Thus, educating kids and monitoring their online surfing time can save parents from the anguish of having to deal with an uncomfortable situation later.

Exposed to a variety of stimuli, children today are able to surf and visit websites, portals, enter chat rooms or participate in online games. Since technology has brought a tremendous shift in children’s recreational time, kids should be taught that when they are talking with someone in a chat room or an instant message session, they are actually interacting with strangers unless they know in person the other party from the “real” world, like their school class or sports team.

A number of social studies reveal a shocking number. One i Read more…

We hear about product recalls that either scare us to death or simply annoy us. But how can we know about recalls that aren’t so “famous” but that do affect us? Find out the best ways to be an informed consumer, one that knows what products are being recalled and are unsafe to use.

We are a nation of shoppers, whether we hit the mall, shop on-line, trade in our old vehicles or update our appliances, even in this sluggish economy, we are buying products. Gifts for baby showers, accessories for dorms, you name it and Americans are buying it. We hear about product recalls that either scare us to death or simply annoy us. In recent years there have been recalls on blinds after 3 deaths, recalls on women’s robes after 6 deaths, an FDA warning to stop using Hydroxycut immediately and groceries from peanut butter to Nestle Toll House Dough have been pulled off of the shelves.

Joanna Rutkowska, virtualization and security researcher, has released a Proof of Concept malware that allows an attacker to steal software encryption passwords. Her current version is designed to attack TrueCrypt software encryption, but can be evolved to attack any other software encryption product, and even BitLocker on a TPM-enabled machine.

The attack works like this:
1. you leave your computer in your hotel room while you go to the gym to work out.
2. the maid enters the room, and inserts a bootable USB flash drive or bootable hard drive into your computer.
3. the maid boots your computer, which boots of the USB drive.
4. the drive installs low-level malware into your computer, modifying the TrueCrypt loader and master boot record.
5. you come back from the gym and boot your computer, and enter your software encryption password.
6.
